Carl D. Unzicker

Sept. 17, 1938-May 25, 2012

GOSHEN — Carl David Unzicker, 73, died Friday after a brief illness.

He was born Sept. 17, 1938, near Washburn, Ill.,  to the late Earl and Josephine (Ulrich) Unzicker.

He is survived by his wife, Arleta; two sons, Timothy (Dawn), Roundup, Mont., and Antony (Carol), Goshen; four grandchildren, Joel, Kristen, Gina and Matthew; a brother, Kenneth (Barbara) Unzicker, Normal, Ill.; and two sisters, Carol Prill, Peoria, Ill., and Sharon Visser, San Diego, Calif.

He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Joyce.

Carl was baptized at the Linn Mennonite Church near Roanoke, Ill. After farming for several years and doing voluntary service with Mennonite Mission Board, he attended Goshen College. After graduating he taught art in Middlebury and in Colorado, where the Unzickers lived from 1970 to 2010.

Following retirement, Carl served with Mennonite Disaster Service. With his wife, he helped the Navajos in Arizona build a church. Together they volunteered for three months in 2008 at Mennohof, Shipshewana.  Recently he volunteered at the Depot Thrift Store, Goshen.

Carl enjoyed working with animals and kept a variety of poultry and livestock on their ranch. He trained horses, and showed and raced them in several western states. He also liked art work and painted until his recent illness.

He especially enjoyed his grandchildren, making sure they had a good time every summer when they visited the Colorado ranch, and playing games with them in Indiana.

Friends may call from 9:15 until the 10:30 a.m. memorial service Wednesday in the Koinonia Room at College Mennonite Church, Goshen.

Memorial contributions may be given to Mennonite Disaster Services or to Mennonite Central Committee.  Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen, is assisting with arrangements.

Online condolences may be sent at www.yoderculpfuneralhome.com.
