John E. Hockman

TOPEKA — John Edward Hockman, 56, passed away at I.U. Health System, Goshen, just after noon Friday.

John was born to Paul and Roberta Hockman Jan. 20, 1956, in Springfield, Ohio. Mr. Hockman spent his formative years in Springfield before going to the University of Kentucky in Lexington.

On May 20, 1978, John was married in Lexington, Ky., at the Maxwell Street Presbyterian Church. Along with his wife Joan they later moved to Topeka where John served as the Pastor of Topeka Mennonite Church for some ten years from 1995-2005.

He was a member of Saint Mary’s Orthodox Christian Church, Goshen, and he served as a Sub-Deacon in the Orthodox Church. He also was on the management team at the Panera Bread restaurant. He loved to Umpire baseball games. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family.

Mr. Hockman is survived by his mother, Roberta Hockman, Springfield, Ohio. Also surviving are his wife, Joan Hockman, Topeka; and a daughter, Jennifer Navarrete, Key Largo, Florida. One sister, Irene (Jim) Newton, Springfield, Ohio, survives as well. Along with these family members he is survived by a sister-in-law, Lesa Hockman, Springfield, Ohio; several nieces and nephews; and two granddaughters survive.

John was preceded in death by his father, Paul Hockman; and a brother, Robert Hockman.

A funeral service for Mr. Hockman is scheduled for Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Saint Mary’s Orthodox Christian Church, 65159 C.R. 33, Goshen. Father Matthew Wade will officiate the service.

Friends and family may call Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the Church. Calling hours will also be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church in Goshen. Burial will follow the service in Oakridge Cemetery, Goshen.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Joan Hockman in loving memory of John.
