GOSHEN — William “Bill” J. Bloss, 79, died early Wednesday morning at IU Health Goshen Hospital after battling melanoma since October 2011.
He was born Sept. 1, 1932, in Goshen, to Lewis R. and Magdalena (Vander Reyden) Bloss.
He married Martha J. Haney Nov. 26, 1954. She survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Sue Ann (Dennis) Glasgow, Simpsonville, S.C., and Marcia Lynn (George) Christner, Goshen; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
Mr. Bloss graduated from Goshen High School in 1950 and started the alumni reunion for GHS graduates that takes place every September.
A member of First English Lutheran Church, Mr. Bloss was an active member of the Goshen community. He served as city councilman from 1976 to 1991 and 1996 to 2007, was president of Campfire, Elkhart County 4-H Fair president in 1981 and on the Goshen Planning Commission. He served on the Greencroft Foundation Board until 2011; was the current president of the Goshen Hospital Auxiliary Board and current president of the Celebrate America Committee where he had volunteered since 2006. He was a 50-year member of the Goshen Masonic Lodge 12 and a member of the Goshen Jaycees from 1955 to 2002 where he had also served as state chairman. He also volunteered as a Red Coat at IU Health Goshen Hospital. He received both the Bud Beller Community Spirit Award and the Book of Golden Deeds Award in 2009. As a veteran, he served during the Korean War in Germany from 1952-1954.
Bill and his wife, Martha, owned and operated Bloss Monuments Inc. from 1981 to 2005.
Friends may call Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen, and 30 minutes prior to the 10 a.m. funeral service Saturday at First English Lutheran Church, Goshen. Pastor Gene Hollingsworth will officiate.
Burial will follow in Benton Lutheran Cemetery, Goshen.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First English Lutheran Church or Goshen Hospital and Healthcare Foundation for the Auxiliary or the Cancer Center.
