TUCSON,Ariz. —
Fred E. Henderson, 86, passed away at 7 a.m. May 5 in Tucson.
He was born Feb. 8, 1926 in Topeka, Ind. (LaGrange County), to Walter and Iva (Bowsher) Henderson.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, Benson; his children from a previous marriage, son, Rodney J. Henderson, Port Orchard, Wash., and a daughter, Marilee Henderson, Chelan, Wash.; three grandchildren, Joe Henderson, James Henderson and Brandon Stolzenburg; and two great-grandchildren, Kyla Henderson and Payton James Henderson. Also surviving are four loving stepchildren, Kathy Burdin, Jack Savino, Toni Turbide and Patricia King.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, George B. Henderson, Phillip A. Henderson and Harley Henderson; and three sisters, Marilee Bailey, Margaret Henderson, who died at the age of 5, and Esther Henderson, who died as an infant.
Fred graduated from Topeka High School in 1945. He went to work for Norm’s Flower Shop in LaGrange, Ind., and was sent to floral school in Washington State. He eventually owned a flower shop, Artistry in Flowers, in Olympia, Wash. He also became a good baker while serving in the United States Army during the Korean War, 1948 to 1950.
A man of many talents, he learned to carve wood. After selling the floral shop, he moved to Priest River, Idaho, and tried his hand at ranching for seven years. Next came a move to warmer Arizona, settling near Pearce and eventually to Dragoon, where he worked in a rest area known as “The Thing.” Fred worked his remaining years as a security guard for 13 years at the mobile home park where he lived in Tucson. Fred belonged to the Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church in Tucson.
Fred kept busy all his life with whatever there was to do — no job was too small or too big.
The Funeraria Del Angel Funeral Home in Tucson assisted the family with arrangements.
A private graveside service will take place at a later date at Eden Cemetery, Topeka, Ind.
