Donald Wayne Shoup

Jan. 23, 1930-Jan. 31, 2013

MIDDLEBURY — Donald Wayne Shoup, 83, died after a brief illness at 10 a.m. Thursday at his residence. He was born Jan. 23, 1930 in Fort Wayne, to Vernon and Mary (Teeters) Shoup.

On Oct. 8, 1950, he married Shirley Yoder in Wakarusa; she survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, James (Sally) Shoup, Pendleton, Michael Shoup, Sterling, Va., and Bruce (Beth Anne) Shoup, Mishawaka; six grandchildren, Christopher, Matthew, Jennifer, Tyler, Austin and Curtis; and six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandchildren, Will Shoup, Andrew Shoup and Katherine Shoup; and granddaughter-in-law, Jenn Shoup.

Don was a lifelong resident of Middlebury with the exception of four years spent earning a degree in economics at Kalamazoo College, Kalamazoo, Mich. He graduated from Middlebury High School in 1948, where he was class salutatorian and played basketball, baseball and ran track.

After graduating from college, Don returned to Middlebury to work in the family business, Pioneer Manufacturing Company, and later founded Shoup Tax and Accounting Service. He was a member of the Middlebury School Board during the 1960s where he served as president.

Don was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in many different sports. He was a lifelong Cubs fan.

In retirement, he and Shirley spent time in both North Carolina and Arizona. He also loved traveling and had been in all 50 states and also traveled internationally. He was a lifetime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Middlebury, where he served on the church council. He had recently been attending Elkhart Faith United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 S. Main St., Middlebury, where funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Monday. The Rev. John Hogsett of Elkhart Faith United Methodist Church will officiate.

Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery, Middlebury.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of the donor’s choice.
