SPENCER — Lorna Kathleen Rickard, 89, died Saturday at the Owen Valley Health Campus.

She was born Nov. 21, 1919, in Elkhart, to Patrick and Saba (Eby) Daugherty.

She graduated from Jimtown High school in 1937 and married James J. Rickard, her high school sweetheart, Dec. 25, 1939.

She and her husband moved to Spencer in 2001.

She was a member of Central Christian Church of Elkhart, and attended Spencer Christian Church.

She retired from the Elkhart County Abstract Company in 1984, but continued to work another 15 years as a community activist in Elkhart County.

She co-founded the Citizen League for Environmental Action Now (CLEAN) and fought for a variety of public safety and health issues, including the passage of the Elkhart County ground water protection ordinance.

Her work won her the Elkhart Council on Aging Most Spirited Senior Award, Elkhart County Health Department Community Red Apple Award, Indiana Public Health Association Citizen Advocacy Award, Elkhart Mayor’s I-Act Award, Church World Services Award for her work with Church Community Services and leading the Crop Walk.

She received two Sagamore of the Wabash Awards — the first for her work with CLEAN which resulted in EPA Superfund Site status for Conrail Yard pollution site, and the second for her work to ensure the health of the residents within the pollution site by lobbying for household health surveys, and access to city water and home vapor extraction systems.

She is survived by a son, Alan J. “AJ” (Kay) Rickard, Livingston, Texas; a daughter, Karen (Lee) Huss, Spencer; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her brother, Benjamin.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at West-Parrish-Pedigo Funeral Home, Spencer.

A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Wilson officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, with family receiving friends one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
