Harold ‘Barky’ Bartman

Feb. 25, 1925-Nov. 20, 2009

SYRACUSE — Harold “Barky” Bartman Jr., 84, 3686 E. 1300 North, Syracuse, died unexpectedly after a short illness Friday at 2:14 p.m. at Goshen General Hospital, where he had been since Tuesday.

He was born Feb. 25, 1925, in Elkhart County, to Helen (Grant) and Harold Bartman.

He married Ruby Jeanette Zentz April 13, 1946. She preceded him in death Feb. 6, 2001.

He spent his lifetime in the Nappanee and Syracuse areas and was retired from the RV industry. He was employed part time at Maxwelton Golf Club at the time of his death, where he was also a member.

He was a World War II Navy veteran and an avid ice fisherman and golfer.

He is survived by a son, Joe (Marilyn) Bartman, Syracuse; a daughter, Kathryn Bartman, Milford; three sisters, Betty (Leroy) Chokey, Nappanee, Ruth Filley and Carmen Bickham, both of Rochester; four grandchildren, Robert Bartman, Brandy Ward, Bambi (Dave) Stuckman and Brendy (Robert) Weldy; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Brent Allen Bartman; two daughters, Donna Lee Bartman and Nedra Kay Bartman; two brothers, Donald and James Bartman; and two sisters, Colleen Herrick and Shirley Ellis.

The body will lay in state at Thompson-Lengacher and Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral is scheduled for Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. John French, Wawasee Heights Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will take place at South Union Cemetery. Military graveside services will be provided by the Nappanee American Legion.

Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society.
