Omer E. Troyer

Omer E. Troyer, 84, 1225 Greencroft Drive, Goshen, died Sunday at 10:10 a.m. at the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Elkhart, where he was a patient for one day.

He was born Dec. 29, 1924 in Clinton Township, to Ezra and Mary (Miller) Troyer.

He attended Clinton Christian School for eight years, earned his GED and took drafting classes at Ivy Tech. He served in the U.S. Army.

He worked many years at Supreme Corp., where he designed, built and maintained large industrial machines. He also worked at Moore’s Timesaving Equipment, Elkhart, and New Paris Silo. He owned and operated a feed mill in Valentine.

A member of East Goshen Mennonite Church, he sang bass with the Gospel Messengers and was one of four men who sang in the choir all 37 years. He and his family traveled to churches in Northern Indiana and surrounding states every Sunday evening for concerts.

He enjoyed traveling by car with Dora to visit their sons in Texas and California. He also drove to Alaska and flew to Switzerland and Hawaii. He volunteered many hours helping to build Shalom Houses. His family and many friends benefitted from his handyman skills and the use of his beloved front-end loader.

He married Dora Miller Nov. 10, 1945, at Middlebury Mennonite Church. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Robert D. (Anne) Troyer, Lewisville, Texas, and Denver J. Troyer, Chico, Calif.; two daughters, Peggy (Ed) Garcia, Goshen, and Delores (Steve Wogoman) Troyer, Elkhart; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Marion (Dorothy) Troyer, Goshen, Elmer Troyer, Goshen, and Mervin (June) Troyer, Millersburg; and two sisters, Edna Gingerich, Goshen, and Gladys Christner, Topeka.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Melvin Troyer.

Friends may call today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen, and one hour prior to the 10 a.m. funeral service Wednesday at East Goshen Mennonite Church. The Revs. Steve Slagel and Merle Hostetler of the church will conduct the service.

Memorials may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care.
