KIMMELL — Melvin E. Twaits, 83, died Thursday at 9 p.m. at Rivercrest Specialty Hospital, Mishawaka.
He was born July 9, 1926 in Sparta Township, to John R. “Shortie” and Lora (Hart) Twaits.
He served his country honorably in the United States Navy on the U.S.S. Chenango from 1942-1946. He retired as a maintenance supervisor at Essex Wire and later United Technologies after more than 30 years of service.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 243 in Ligonier. He enjoyed farming, gardening, working on cars and fixing things.
He is survived by two daughters, Sarah “Sue” (Ron) Browning, Bear Lake, and Melanie (Jeff) Creek, Huntertown; four granddaughters, Carla Ladig, Columbia City, Gracie Creek and Cierra Creek, both of Huntertown, and Brandi Twaits, Ashley; great-grandson, Kyle Philips, Columbia City; and a sister, Alice Cripe, Millersburg.
He was preceded in death by his son, Melvin Scott Waits; and two sisters, Rose Twaits and Ruth Davidson.
Friends may call Monday from 10 a.m. until the noon funeral service at Yeager Funeral Home, Ligonier. The Rev. Wray McCalister will lead the service.
Burial will be in Stringtown Cemetery, Washington Township.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 243, Ligonier.
