Elaine S. Unzicker

GOSHEN — Elaine S. Unzicker, 73, died at home surrounded by family Sunday after a long battle with cancer.

Elaine was born Oct. 12, 1939 in Aurora, Ill. She graduated from Goshen College in 1961 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and received a master’s degree in education from Northwestern University in 1967.

On Aug. 12, 1961, she married Roger Unzicker. In 1972, the couple returned to settle in Goshen after three years working with Mennonite missions organizations in Tanzania. Roger Unzicker, a medical doctor with Middlebury Family Physicians, passed away in 1992.

In 2006, Elaine married Harold Kauffman, a fellow graduate of Goshen College and retired professor of Agriculture at the University of Illinois.

Elaine was an elementary school teacher. She taught in Chicago from 1966 to 1967 and later at Jefferson Elementary from 1991 to 2002.

She was a member of College Mennonite Church, where she most recently served on the Nurture Commission, the Life Cycle Committee, and taught summer Bible school for many years.

Survivors include her husband, Harold Kauffman; four sons, Eric, and his wife, Sheri, Thomas, and his wife, Andrea, David, and his wife, Jenelle, and Jeffrey; a sister, Phyllis Yoder; and five grandchildren, Sophia, Sam, Jacob, Leo and Elena.

A time of visitation for friends and family is scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday in the Koinonia room of College Mennonite Church, Goshen. A memorial service will take place in the sanctuary of the church Sunday at 2 p.m.

Memorials may be directed to Mennonite Central Committee and Campus Center for Young Children at College Mennonite Church.
