Elmer R. ‘Ray’ Matson

ELKHART — Elmer R. “Ray” Matson, 97, formerly of 58245 C.R. 9 South, died Friday at 9:30 p.m. at Miller’s Merry Manor, New Carlisle.
He was born Oct. 18, 1912, in Montpelier to William Foster and Mable V. (Swigert) Matson. He moved to this area from Montpelier in 1956.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 and was a graduate of Anderson College and Ball State University. He worked as a teacher from 1946 until 1978, having taught at Pendleton, Montpelier and retired from Elkhart Community Schools. He was a member of the First Church of God, Elkhart, and attended South Side Church of God, South Bend.
He married Irma I. Wagner Dec. 20, 1941, at Sunnymeade Church of God, South Bend. She survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Rae Jeaniene Matson, South Bend, and Sheryl M. Fields, Lake Ann, Mich.; two grandsons, Jeremy Fields, Lake Ann, Mich., and Kevin (Amy) Fields, Middlebury; great-granddaughter, Laira Fields, Lake Ann, Mich.; and a sister, Ruth Geiger, Angola.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Clysto Lloyd, Faye Robinson and Catherine Tait.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral service Monday at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen. The Rev. Greg Crump will conduct the services.
Burial will be in Violett Cemetery, Goshen.
