Melvin G. Huber

GOSHEN —

Melvin G. Huber, 87, Goshen, died Tuesday at 6:40 a.m. at Goshen General Hospital.

He was born March 9, 1923, in Goshen, to Fred and Sarah (Shidler) Huber. Except for the time he spent in the Army, he spent his life in the area.

He attended Goshen High School. He joined the United States Army, serving from April 17, 1943, to Feb. 10, 1946. He was a corporal and worked as an airplane mechanic.

He drove truck for 30 years for Star Tank and Boat, which became Universal. He retired in 1986. He also worked at City Dairy, where he drove a horse and buggy milk truck. In the 1950s, he worked for Culp Funeral Home, Goshen. He was a member of Jefferson Brethren Church.

He married Joann A. Detwiler Nov. 21, 1942, in the parsonage of the First Brethren Church in Goshen. She survives.

Other survivors include his four children, Rick (Jan) Huber, Goshen, Steve (Sandy) Huber, Goshen, Sandy (Michael) Vance, New Paris, and Barb (Bob) Hoke, Columbia City; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a brother, Stanley (Mary) Huber, Goshen; three sisters in-law, Jean Huber, Kendallville, and Erdene Mishler and Myrtle Huber, both of Goshen.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Calvin, Orris and Arthur Huber; and two sisters, Evelyn Webb and Lorraine Phebus.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. funeral service at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen. The Rev. Ron Spyker of Jefferson Brethren Church, will officiate. His body will be cremated following services.

Memorial donations may be made to the Helping Hands Ministry or Jefferson Brethren Church.
