Jack E. Hubbard

GOSHEN — Jack E. Hubbard Sr., 93, passed away Wednesday at his home.

He was born Dec. 12, 1918, in Iuka, Miss., and moved to Elkhart in 1926. He married Mary Jane Bowman Nov. 1, 1947, and was married for 50 years before her passing in 1997.

Surviving is a son, Dr. Jack E. (Cathy) Hubbard Jr., Golden Valley Clinic, Minn.; a daughter, Lorna (Pat) Billey, Goshen; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother; and seven sisters.

Jack joined the C.C.C. for two years during the 1930s depression, helping to build Pokagon State Park. He served as sergeant in the United States Marine Corps during World War II.

He did interior decorating, worked at Elkhart Rubber Works and owned Appt. Barber Shop, retiring in 1986 after 36 years. He also owned Hubbard Enterprises for 12 years where he invented the patented “Squirrel Twirl.” He also had two other patents.

He was an accomplished artist in portraits and landscaping and had entered many juried art shows over the years. He received a number of awards and was a member of the Elkhart Art League and the Goshen League.

He and his wife helped organize the Elkhart County Humane Society and he was the last surviving member of that group. He was past president and member of the Elkhart Conservation Club and organizer and Commandant of Whisler Marine Corps League. He was a Scout Master for 25 years and a member of 1st United Methodist Church, Goshen.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Memorials may be given to Elkhart County Humane Society, Elkhart Conservation Club or the church.
