Delmar DeForrest Went Sr.

July 22, 1920-Jan. 9, 2013

ELKHART —Delmar DeForrest Went Sr., 92, died at 1:41 p.m. Wednesday at Hubbard Hill Estates.  

Delmar was born July 22, 1920 in Elkhart, to William O. and Rosa Ella (Grunwalt) Went.

He is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Jean (Larry) Geerts of Elkhart; a son, Delmar (B.J.) Went Jr. of Elkhart; a stepdaughter, Patti Showalter of Elkhart; a stepson, Gary (Janell) O’Dell of Middlebury; a sister, Joyce (Bill) Darlington of Texas; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; 11 step great-grandchildren; and 12 step great-great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents; a stepgranddaughter; a step great-great-grandson; two sisters, Maxine Kunkle and Juanita Vargo; three brothers, John Paul Sr., Chedrick “Chet” and Max Went.

Delmar worked at C.G. Conn for 35 years and was owner/operator of VerDel Drapery for 12 years.  

He graduated from Elkhart High School in 1939 and was a veteran of the United States Army who served during World War II. He was a life member of the Goshen Moose, a 50-year member of both the Masonic Lodge George Washington 325 Bristol and Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend, a member of American Legion Post 143, Bristol, Disabled American Veterans Post 19, Elkhart, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 985, Goshen, the Order of the Eastern Star and Bristol United Methodist Church.

A memorial service will take place at a later date.

Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home in Elkhart has been entrusted with the arrangements.  Online condolences may be shared at www.hartzlergutermuthinman.com.
