GOSHEN —
Sylvia Ethel Schrock Martin, daughter of William Metzler Schrock and Mary Ethel Van Scoik Schrock, was born July 11, 1924, on a farm on C.R. 9 in rural Goshen. She died at Greencroft Health Care, Goshen, Wednesday.
She graduated from Wakarusa High School in 1942 and from Goshen College with a degree in elementary education in 1946.
She married Dale Ernest Martin, son of Albert and Mabel Smith Martin, Aug. 21, 1949, at the Dunlap Evangelical United Brethren Church. He departed this life Aug. 11, 2003.
Sylvia Martin is survived by three sons, Dennis D. (Carol) of Chicago; Gary E. (Patricia) of Goshen, and Stanley W. (Julie) of Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Her son L. Brian (Sue) preceded her in death on May 10, 1998.
Her sister Mary E. (Robert) Hill of Elora, Ontario, and her brothers, Herman (Lois) of rural Goshen and Lloyd (Arlene) of Pittsboro, survive, while Roscoe (Doris) and Emogene (David) Reed, completed their earthly pilgrimage before her. She was grandmother to 15 and great-grandmother to 15.
Beginning in 1946, with several interruptions, Sylvia devotedly and inventively taught elementary school children for 19 years in Concord, Goshen, and Warsaw public schools, focusing on first and second grade and learning to read. With her husband she enjoyed many summertime stays at a lake-side cottage on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, near her sister and brother-in-law’s farm.
At the time of her death she was a member of West Goshen Church of the Brethren. Before her marriage, she and her family were active members of Bethel Mennonite Brethren in Christ (United Missionary) Church, including summer camp meetings at the Prairie Campgrounds.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen.
A private family prayer service with burial at Yellow Creek Cemetery will take place with a public memorial service in March.
Memorial donations may be given to the Greencroft Foundation.
